What Will They Think?
“What will they think?”
Those four little words can hold so much power over us, can’t they? They creep into our minds at the most inconvenient times, especially when we’re trying something new—like moving our bodies or starting a fitness journey.
Am I good enough?
Will I embarrass myself?
What if I don’t fit in?
For many of us, the fear of failure or judgment keeps us from embracing the fullness of life God intended for us. But what if we shifted our perspective? What if we stopped focusing on “getting in shape” and started thinking about living life to its fullest—moving our bodies, defying our fears, and embracing the person God created us to be?
Defying Fear in Fitness
I’ll let you in on a little secret: I wrestle with these thoughts almost every time I work out. Yes, me—Dr. Nancy Meyer, the Ironman finisher who has competed in countless events. You might think, She’s got it all together, but let me assure you, I don’t.
Before every workout, those nagging thoughts creep in:
Will I be able to keep up?
What if I make a fool of myself?
What if I forget something important?
I’ve had to learn to defy my fear every time I lace up my shoes, hop on my bike, or step into the gym. Isn’t it crazy how something as simple as exercise can feel so intimidating?
But here’s the thing: Every time I push past those fears, I win. Whether or not my workout is perfect, I’ve already succeeded because I showed up.
Embracing Imperfection
And trust me, I’m far from perfect! I’ve forgotten my cycling shoes (more than once). I’ve left my bike computer, gloves, water bottles, and even my post-workout snacks at home. I’ve even driven home from a ride with my helmet still on—much to the amusement of other drivers. 🤦♀️
But you know what? None of that really matters. Those moments remind me—and hopefully encourage others—that nobody has it all together. We’re all just doing the best we can.
The truth is, we don’t have to be perfect. We’re created in God’s image, and He is perfect so that we don’t have to be.
Practical Tips for Defying Fear and Moving Your Body
If you’re ready to start living life to the fullest but feel a little overwhelmed, here are some practical tips to help you get started:
Make a Checklist: Write down everything you need for your activity—shoes, water, snacks, gloves, or any special equipment.
Prepare the Night Before: Lay out your gear so it’s ready to go.
Use Reminders: Post a note on the door as a last-minute checklist before you leave.
Pack Extras: Bring a change of clothes to stay warm and fresh after your activity.
Stay Fueled and Hydrated: Don’t forget water and snacks to keep your energy up.
Give Yourself Grace: Laugh at your mistakes and learn from them.
Remember, your small steps inspire others. When you forget something, it’s a reminder to those around you that nobody is perfect—and that’s okay.
Defying Fear Principle: Fear tells us we’re not good enough, but God tells us the opposite. Moving past fear isn’t about never feeling afraid; it’s about trusting God and stepping forward anyway.
Defying Fear Verse: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” – 2 Timothy 1:7
You don’t have to let fear hold you back. Whether it’s your first workout in years or a step outside your comfort zone, remember this: If I can do it, so can you. Let’s move our bodies, defy our fears, and live the abundant life God has called us to.
You’ve got this, and God’s got you. Let’s go! 🚴♀️💪
